Subira House was built about 200 years ago by Said Bin Hamid al Busaidi, an important and wealthy "liwali" from Oman, appointed governor by the Sultan of Zanzibar. His family resided here until 1972.
Today Subira House is Grade I listed and subject to preservation by the Lamu Conservation Trust due to the great architectural and historical interest.
We found Subira House in 1990 and started to slowly restore it some years later. “Pole Pole”, as the Swahili would say.
Subira was a one storey building when we bought it. We later added a first and then a second floor with more bedrooms and galleries.
After selling our wellknown Dala-Floda Inn, one of the first hotels in Sweden with an environmental label, we now manage our Lamu business with equal ecological concern.
We have acquired a Silver Rating by Ecotourism Kenya.
