Lamu Island is part of Lamu archipelago.
A small strait separates Lamu Island from Manda Island.

All these buildings are of coral and lime/cement plaster with roofs of Palm leaves.

If you come by air you land on Manda Island. This is the airport..
You can fly from Nairobi Kenyatta International Airport or from Malindi by Fly 540
or choose the domestic Wilson Airport from Nairobi by Safarilink or Air Kenya.
A few flights by Mombasa Air Service from Mombasa.

The Madaraka Express

The new SGR 500 meter long Railway, built by the Chinese.
From Nairobi to Mombasa leaves daily at 9 am.
You reach Mombasa 14.16
Same time to go back.
You need to shuttle from city center to the station of departure.


Then a bus or private minibus will take you up along the coast to Mokowe ferry.
(30 min by boat to Lamu.)
Mombasa - Lamu is about 6-7 hours drive. You pass the pretty sea side town Malindi.
A stop over there is also nice to do.
At present the last 80 km to Lamu is really bumpy on murram road.
You can alternatively get off the bus in Malindi, stay overnight, look at the town
and do the last part by air. (Air Kenya and Fly 540 30 min).
